ANTONIO MARIA PICO

Three times Alcalde of San Jose
Antonio María Pico was a Californio politician, ranchero, and a
signer of the Californian Constitution in 1849. He also served twice
as Alcalde of San José. Alcalde is the traditional Spanish municipal
magistrate, who had both judicial and administrative functions from
1777 to 1850, during the Spanish, Mexican, and early American
periods, prior to California's admission to statehood. He was was a
signer of the Californian Constitution and elected to the Electoral
College in 1856 as an elector for Abraham Lincoln.
